Gunsling Birds

You should listen to this record. It’s by the late, lovable scamp Utah Philips, who was a veteran, rail-riding hobo, and probably the last American. “Starlight on the Rails,” released three years before his death in 2008, features his preternatural ability to tell a story both orally and musically; each song is preceded by Utah telling a story about the song’s origin. The title track is particularly wonderful.
